Thank you so much for sponsoring Olivia and helping out the family in Cambodia - the weekend run raised a whopping 15,740 rmb ($2435).

This weekend, our incredible Olivia Bratton is taking on an extraordinary challenge! She is running 4 miles, every 4 hours for 48 hours, totalling 48 miles. Let’s give her some extra motivation by sponsoring the miles she runs! We could do this by donating 1, 2, 5, 10 or any rmb per mile. The money raised will go to the Ray of Light who suffered a tragedy last week when one of the students Sian Roza (and her 8 year old brother) died while scavenging near a lake. Ray of Light has pledged to support their family, in particular the only remaining child, a 13 year old girl. The money raised will ensure she has the means for an education.
Please consider donating to a family that needs our help while also giving Olivia motivation to keep running. You can donate here. A warm and appreciative thank you!! We had a very positive meeting with the family today. We now have a very good plan to help the family moving forward. Ray of Light Cambodia will cover the earnings the remaining daughter, Liza, would make scavenging so that she can go to state school. That figure is $50 a month. We have made a commitment to help the family for as long as she wants to study, including university later on. Liza is 13 and our hope is that she will at least finish High School. We are also going to help them with school materials etcetera. If you would like to help please go to this page. Thank you all for the kind words and support.
Thank you everyone for your words of support. We have been in contact with the mother and she would like Liza to continue attending school. Ray of Lights goal has always been to help break the cycle of poverty for as many of these children as possible. It was poverty that led to this tragedy as the two kids were scavenging next to a lake. If you would like to help support the work we are doing you can donate here. If you want to help Sian Roza's family you can go to the dedicated page.
It is with a very heavy heart that I share some tragic news. One of our students Sian Roza passed away. From what I’ve been told she was scavenging for rubbish near a lake with her younger brother. They fell in and didn’t make it out. We are working with the family to support them but also to hopefully have her sister Liza continue her education to help break the cycle of poverty that forces these children to live such perilous lives. I am struggling for words to express how distraught I feel but I want you to know this - your support over the years has already helped many children grow up, get jobs and help their families out of poverty. Thank you!
We also help kids get back into school. This is Yorn he is older than Yon (see the next post) but we are waiting to get his birth certificate made as he is not sure how old he is. He was at school then left to work on the streets as a scavenger. He is going back into grade 2 but he is also attending the ROLC school and so will also eventually be able to be in a grade more suitable to his age. Of course this will take a few years but thanks to everyone’s support I know we can help him achieve this.
Another job ROLC does is help children register at the local state school. This is Yon today registering at school for the first time ever. He is ten years old and will go into grade 1. He is also attending he ROLC school and with our help he will be able to jump grades. Next year he can go into grade 3 and the year after into grade 5. So he will eventually be able to be in a grade compatible to his age and ability. He will have to sit exams to get into grade 3 and then grade 5 but our program is set up to help him do this. We wish Yon all the best and we thank you for your continued support of ROLC.
Happy New Year everyone! Well after yet another couple of weeks school closure, due to Covid fears/outbreaks in Cambodia, we are back open and with three new students. With more coming soon. We are looking forward to a successful 2021 with hopefully fewer interruptions.
